Santa Ana River Threatened
By Freeway Extension

Proposed extension of 57 Freeway threatens Santa Ana River, National Recreation Trail, water quality and other river resources. Orange County Transportation Authority is currently studying the potential of extending the 57 Freeway from it current terminus at the 22 Freeway, south to the 405 or possibly even Pacific Coast Highway. The study is officially known as the Central County Corridor Study. Please contact OCTA now and tell them to kill the 57 freeway extension and "Save" the Santa Ana River. The OCTA board is made up of your elected officials. Let them know how you feel.

Extension of 57 fwy. would destroy this stretch of Santa Ana River National Recreation Trail and quality open space like that pictured below.

Protect the San Mateo Creek Watershed
The San Mateo Creek watershed is threatened at its upper and lower reaches. Nevada Hydro wants to dam upper tributary canyons for a get rich quick energy scheme which would put a 14 story dam on the edge of the San Mateo Canyon Wilderness Area. Learn more about dam issue. At the lower reach the Transportation Corridor Agencies are pushing the Foothill South Tollroad destroying critical habitat for numerous threatened and endangered species as well as bisecting a previously protected land conservancy and a State Park. Even the famed Trestles surf break will be destroyed. Learn more about tollroad issue. Stop Nevada Hydro and the TCA. Call your elected officials and tell them to PROTECT THE SAN MATEO WATERSHED!

Santa Ana Mountain Ecosystem Expedition 2008
SoCal Wild is teaming up with the Santiago Creek Preservation and Restoration Project  and other sponsors and supporters to revisit the Biota of the Santa Ana Mountains on a four-week back country expedition to document changes and impacts occurring in the range since Pequanat explored it between 1937 and 1951. Particular interest will be paid to the areas threatened by various development projects, recreational impacts, potential wilderness/roadless area designation and of course the flora and fauna of the "Sierra de Santa Ana." A video documentary will be shot during the expedition.  Researchers, crew and sponsors are being recruited now. Sign up for this exciting 2008 expedition or make a tax deductible financial contribution. Help keep the Santa Ana Mountains wild.
